Time Synchronization Module

The Time Synch Module is used when there are a large number of sensors in the network. This module ensures that all sensor nodes have the correct clock set up and that each data sample (irrespective of which node it is on) has the correct time stamp. Time synchronization is critical in the coordination and fusion of events and in multi-sensor data fusion (MSDF).

Wireless Communications Module

The Wireless Communications Module is used when wireless (radio-enabled) sensor nodes are deployed in the system. This library routine is called when remote data is requested, such as when gateway node or acquisition card needs to collect data from the remote SensorNode devices.

Remote Data Collection Module

The Remote Data Collection Module establishes a reliable link between two nodes, like a sensor node and gateway node (for wired or wireless). These modules are also used to send and receive command and control information for the SensorNodes; thus, irrespective of the location, each sensor can be individually controlled: turned on/off, put in sleep mode, collect data, etc.

Multi-Sensor Data Fusion (MSDF) Module

Multi-Sensor Data Fusion (MSDF) is a critical feature that helps to identify events and the movement of events from one location to another location (ex: migration of cloud of gas) in the collected sensor data. The MSDF module enables a global, full system view of sensors in the network, using data features, comparisons, and time stamps.

On-board Data Filter and Processing Module

Sensors like strain gages or accelerometers require extensive digital signal processing and data filtering. Innovative on-board data filtering and processing software modules are used to condition the sensor data. For example, it can be used to remove noise due to power lines or to remove environmental noise in strain gage data.

Real-time Triggers and Alarms

Software to deploy real-time triggers and alarms enables a system to take action based on specific sensor data or trend of sensor data. Rules can be established to govern the actions, based on sensor data signatures. These software libraries allow designers to develop a system that not only collects sensor data but enables the system to take corrective action based on real-time events and predefined rules.

Roaming Module

The Roaming Module was developed for mobile wireless network systems, and specifically for Body Wearable Sensors. These libraries were developed for a body wearable sensor system that allowed the free mobility of a person without being constrained within the radio range of the transmitter and receiver. The system detects the presence of remote sensors and synchronizes the data when the SmartNode is within the coverage area of a gateway node. Thus, the transmitter and receiver do not need to be within the wireless coverage area.

Sensor Cloud/Web Interface

The Sensor Cloud/Web Interface software modules allow users with internet access to use a secure web interface to review sensor data, generate reports, change parameters and issue commands to control the remote devices and SmartNodes. For instance, SmartNodes could be controlled to turn on or off from anywhere in the world via access to the web interface.

Central Control Unit (CCU)

The Central Control Unit (CCU) includes a communications interface to receive data from the BCM, a database engine, decision support system, and graphical interface to give users access to information, reports, and alerts. Once the CCU receives data from a BMC, it is processed, verified and stored in the database; making it available for both vertical and horizontal analysis. For example, in vertical analysis, historical data analysis can be performed. System behavior of the structure being monitored can be analyzed over the time for degradation and to predict life expectancy. In horizontal analysis, the data from multiple structures can be correlated and analyzed to identify common trends and problems.

User Interface and Reporting System Modules

The user interface will provide the capability to view data and alarms, send commands to the BCM, and generate reports. A user can either opt to generate reports based on a predefined report template, or the user can generate a script for custom reports. In either case the user will have flexibility to choose structures and parameters for generating reports. The application is implemented as open web services so users can access reports remotely, from any secured terminal.

Security Module

The user security will include a secure login to the system. Data communications security will be achieved by providing data encryption and pseudo codes. Thus, the actual information will be encoded in two layers. On lowest layer, the information will be secured by encryption technique and on the higher application level, security will be achieved by providing tags which only the application can understand. To unauthorized users, it will appear as just a binary string.

Database and Data Mining Module

The database is a central data mining location where the sensor data captured from the structure under monitor will be stored. The entire picture of the network and components within the network (ID, location, type, sensors, location of sensors) is stored in the database. This information will be used for data processing, by the Decision Support System (DSS), and for report generation.

Decision Support System (DSS)

The Decision Support System (DSS) is a set of software components that has data, constants, algorithms, and statistical formulae to analyze the data and draw conclusion about the health of the structure. The DSS is the repository of all the structure specific information and engineering data, enabling it to draw conclusion.

Power Management Module (PMM)

The Power Management module was developed to manage and conserve the system and sensor power usage. Power or settings to the sensors can be trigger when a pre-determined event is detected by a sensor or based on a pre-defined schedule. Intelligent power management drastically reduces the battery usage and eliminates the need for larger, heavier batteries.
